Slideshow

The Slideshow displays up to 8 auto-rotating slides to showcase your product images. You can fine-tune how your images look, all slide headings and colors, and add a mobile-specific image for the best experience across all devices.

Set up section

Add this section to any template (except Checkout) and re-order its position. You can use this section multiple times on the same page with different content and settings.

Note: New sections will appear on all pages that use the same template. To add sections to specific pages only, learn how to create and assign multiple templates.

Steps

In your theme editor (Customize):

  1. Select a Template to edit from the dropdown menu in the top bar.

  2. In the side panel, click (+) Add section and select Slideshow.

  3. Change the order of your sections by using the drag and drop handles ⋮⋮

Add image slides

Add up to 8 slides with unique images, headings, buttons, and custom colors.

Steps

In your theme editor (Customize):

  1. Click + Add slide and/or click on the Slide block to open the block settings.

  2. Under Image, click Select image to upload and select your image file.

There are no required images dimensions. We recommend images that are square (1:1) or landscape (3:2) (wider than tall) with a minimum width of 2048px for optimal quality across all devices.

  3. (Optional.) Under Mobile image, click Select image to upload and select an alternate slide image that will show only on mobile.

You may want a different image that works best with mobile screen dimensions.

  4. Select the Image focal point to choose which section of the image to keep centered within the slide.

This setting ensures the key part of your image appears when cropping occurs.

To turn off cropping, you can set the Slideshow image height to Original.

  5. (Optional.) Paste or select an Image link to make the slide image itself a clickable link.

  6. (Optional.) Use the drag and drop handles ⋮⋮ to change the order of the slide blocks.

Add slide content

Add and customize slide headings, buttons, and colors.

Steps

In your theme editor (Customize):

  1. Click the Slide block to open the block settings.

  2. Select a Text position to align all slide content in one of six possible positions.

  3. (Optional.) Enter text for the Accent text to display above the Heading.

We recommended using the Accent as a label or category for what you're showcasing in the slide, such as "Products", "Collections", or "Sale", etc.

  4. Add a Heading as a title of slide.

We recommended a short title of just a few words.

Set the Heading size to Small, Medium, or Large. Make sure it's large enough to be easily readable with your chosen font.

  5. Add Subheading text to display below the heading.

We recommend a few words or short sentence.

Set the Heading size to Small, Medium, or Large. Make sure it's large enough to be easily readable with your chosen font.

  6. (Optional) Use the sliders to adjust the Heading size and Subheading size.

  7. Enter Text for a longer statement. We recommend text no longer than 3 lines on the slide.

Use the formatting buttons to add bold, italic, or linked text.

Set the Text size to Small, Regular or Large.

  8. Change the slide colors to match the slide image and your branding, including Text and Buttons.

  9. Change the Text color to make sure the headings are readable against the other colors or your slide image.

  10. Change the Overlay color and Overlay opacity using the slider to increase the contrast between the text and slide image.

These settings help make your text clear and readable.

Set the Opacity to 100% to create a solid color slide. This helps avoid images that include text in the image itself, which are not responsive or recommended.

  11. (Optional) Click the Overlay gradient option to add a color overlay that fades across a range of hues.

You can choose the style, angle, position, and opacity of the gradient. See Shopify's color gradient guide to learn more.

  12. Click Save.

Add buttons

Link to your collections or products or any other page with a call-to-action button.

Steps

In your theme editor (Customize):

  1. Click on the Slide block you wish to edit.

  2. Select or paste a Link.

Make sure you copy the full URL, including https:// at the start. For example: https://instagram.com/abc123.

  3. Add Button label to display a button underneath the headings.

The most effective button labels ask customers to do something (e.g. Get started, Join us, Shop now). To learn more, read "What is a Call to Action?".

  4. Select a Button style: either Solid, Outline, or Text.

  5. Change the colors for the Buttons and Solid button text to match your branding and slide content.

  6. Click Save.

Slideshow height (image cropping)

The Slideshow section can display your slides at a Custom height or show your uploaded images with their Original height without cropping.

Steps

In your theme editor (Customize):

  1. Click on the Slideshow section to open the section settings.

  2. Choose to display slides images with a Custom or their Original height (without cropping).

The Custom setting will make all slides uniform in height.

For the Original setting, we recommend uploading images with the same dimensions to avoid irregularity in the slideshow height when rotating.

  3. If Custom height is selected: adjust the Height and Mobile Height of your slide images between 50% to 100% of the maximum height.

When Custom height is set to 50%, the slideshow will always display at half the height of the customer's screen or window height.

  4. Click Save.

Slide autoplay

By default, multiple slides will auto-rotate every 6 seconds. Change the time between slides or disable autoplay to let customers click through announcements manually.

Set time between slides

Display each announcement between 2 to 10 seconds. Announcements with more words may need more time for customers to read them.

Steps

  1. Click on the Slideshow section to open the section settings.
  1. Click and drag the slider to select the number of seconds to display each slide (between 2 and 10 seconds).

    Slider for time between slides

Autoplay will pause when customers hover over the slides.

  2. Click Save.

Turn off autoplay

If you turn off autoplay, customers can click the next / previous arrows to view slides at their own pace.

Turning off autoplay can make your online store accessible to more customers, including people with disabilities. Learn more about [accessibility for themes][shopify-accessible] to help make the web inclusive and usable for everyone.

Steps

  1. Click on the Slideshow section to open the section settings.

  2. Click to uncheck the Enable autoplay checkbox.

  3. Click Save.

Section styles

Adjust the overall style by changing the Padding around the slideshow and customize the color and position of the slideshow navigation.

Steps

  1. Click on the Slideshow section to open the settings.

  2. Change the Navigation styles to match the slides and your brand colors.

Select a Navigation alignment to move the next / previous buttons at the bottom of the slides.

Select a Foreground color for the buttons and a Background color to surround the buttons.

Use the Background opacity slider to make the background color more or less transparent.

  3. Select a Padding option to add space around the section to either the Top and bottom, Top only, Bottom only, or set it to None.

  4. Click Save.
