Image hero

The Image hero section provides a highly-customizable feature for your boldest product photos and promotional content. Create a unique section with plenty content and visual design blocks, video player, multiple buttons, and comprehensive image settings.

Set up section

Add this section to any template (except Checkout) and re-order its position. You can use this section multiple times on the same page with different content and settings.

Note: New sections will appear on all pages that use the same template. To add sections to specific pages only, learn how to create and assign multiple templates.

In your theme editor (Customize):

  1. Select a Template to edit from the dropdown menu in the top bar.

  2. In the side panel, click (+) Add section and select Image hero.

  3. Change the order of your sections by using the drag and drop handles ⋮⋮

Set up hero image

Upload an Image and fine-tune its Height, Focal point, and color Overlay or Gradient. Add a Mobile-specific image for the best results on smaller screens.

In your theme editor (Customize):

  1. Click on the Image hero section to open the section settings.

  2. Click Select image to upload and select an image file.

There are no required images dimensions. We simply recommend uploaded images have a minimum width of 2048px for optimal quality across all devices.

  3. (Optional.) Upload a Mobile image to display only on mobile devices.

You may want a different image that works best with mobile screen dimensions, for example a portrait shaped image.

  4. Under Image height, choose to display the image with a Custom or the Original height (without cropping).

  5. If Custom height is selected: adjust the Height and Mobile Height of your image between 50% to 100% of the maximum height.

The Height is the percentage of the window height on your customer's device.

When Custom height is set to 50%, the image will always display at half the height of the customer's screen.

  6. Select the Image focal point to choose which area of the image to keep centered and visible when cropping occurs.

You can also set the Mobile image focal point for small screen sizes.

  7. Change the Overlay color and Overlay opacity using the slider to increase the contrast between the text and image.

These settings help make your text clear and readable.

  8. (Optional) Click the Overlay gradient option to add a color overlay that fades across a range of hues.

You can choose the style, angle, position, and opacity of the gradient. See Shopify's color gradient guide to learn more.

  9. Click Save.

Add video player

Add a short video that customers can click to play within the Image hero section.

The Video player block requires an .mp4 that's been uploaded to your Shopify Files.

This block is best for short videos. We strongly recommend using a video that's around 10 seconds long or less and that's under 10MB in size.

1. Upload video to Shopify files

In your Shopify Admin:

  1. Go to Settings > Files to open your Shopify Files.

  3. Click the Text block for longer content in a more compact size.

  4. Click + Add block to add an Accent block, ideal for a one word label or category.
